The lineup has been determined for the 1st annual LIVE Amateur Cake Decorating Contest. The contestants are (Drum roll, please) Tami Helmers of Mandan, ND, Melissa Anderson of Minot, ND, Jennifer Rath of Velva, ND and Tracy Fitzpatrick of Minot, ND. These four competitors will bring their best cake decorating skills to the stage in the State Fair Center Lobby on Sunday, July 25 at 2 pm. This year’s theme of “On the Farm” will provide an exciting competition because the competitors will decorate their cakes to fit the theme! The four competitors will be vying for cash prizes of $700 to the top three places, along with a People’s Choice award.
The first contestant preview is 
on Melissa Anderson. Melissa works as a Dispatcher for Northstar CriticAir and Community Ambulance and loves to bake in her free time. She enjoys making a differently designed birthday cake for her step-son each year. Melissa and her husband married one year ago, and Melissa took the challenge of making the groom’s cake, as well as the wedding cake, which almost made her late to her own wedding.
Melissa has been baking since she was a very young girl. Melissa and her grandmother would often bake while watching Laverne & Shirley and Gilligan’s Island. By age four, Melissa had a favorite cake recipe memorized. After her grandma passed, Melissa kept her and her grandmother’s favorite activity going. As she grew up with her family of seven, Melissa was counted on to do all the baking for her family.
A few of Melissa’s most notable cakes are a Barbie/Princess cake, California Raisin cake, and a hamburger cake. We look forward to see what Melissa will create on July 25th!
If you like the cake shows on TV, this is the chance for you to see, in person, how the decorating can be done and gives you the chance to vote for your favorite cake!

We would love to have you enter the competition next year! To apply, you have to send a picture of your work and describe what you have done with your cake decorating. To be eligible, you may not have a business for your cakes and you can not be a professional. Keep an eye out next year for the pre-registration date!
